Steam Room Benefits

Eliminate toxins

A steam room session opens the 2.6 million sweat glands of the body allowing the release of toxins that weigh a body down, preventing optimum functioning. A healthy body can sweat out nearly 30% of its toxic build-up in one steam room session making this a perfect adjunct to your massage session which will further assist toxin removal through lymphatic drainage.   Our spa has a steam room conveniently located within a restroom that includes a stand up shower to help you cool down and refresh afterwards.

For people who desire to shed some pounds, detoxifying the body is an absolute must.  In a steam room session the body will shed not only toxins but calories as well.

Rejuvenate and Hydrate the Skin

The body’s heart rate increases as the steam room heats up resulting in greater blood flow to all the blood vessels and tiny capillaries below the skin’s surface.  Vitamins, minerals and oxygen are transported to the skin, via this increased blood flow, creating a healthy, youthful glow.

Boost the immune system via hyperthermia

Most viruses and bacteria need an anaerobic environment, or body that lacks proper oxygenation, to thrive and multiply.  The steam room temperature causes the body to move into a state of hyperthermia which either inhibits further viral and bacterial reproduction and/or kills it all together.  Fevers, whether naturally or artificially induced, help to increase white blood cell production which are the fighter cells of our immune systems.  They protect the body against bacterial or viral attack, thus the steam room is a natural, non-invasive therapy for boosting one’s immunity.

To further boost white blood cell count, one can steam until a sweat breaks then proceed to the shower for a cool rinse off.  Return back to the steam room until the next sweat breaks then return to the shower for another cooling rinse.  This hot-cold, hot-cold technique is very effective for getting rid of an oncoming illness or to simply maintain one’s healthy immune system.

Enhance the Respiratory System

For most people who suffer with asthma and allergies the steam room is very beneficial.  The heated, moist air opens airways and increases moisture production which reduces respiratory resistance.  Essential oils can also be added to the steam water, such as eucalyptus and peppermint oils, which are very beneficial for inhibiting bacterial growth while relieving congestion in the sinuses and upper respiratory system.

Relieve Stress and Relax Muscles

Steam rooms are especially helpful for those who suffer with arthritis that feels worse in cold, dry weather, as well as providing relief for tight muscles.  Heat causes the muscles to relax, allowing blood vessels to soften and expand.  Blood can then bring fresh oxygen and nutrients to the muscles which helps the body and mind to fully relax.

Contraindications to using a sauna include: unstable angina pectoris (chest pain), recent myocardial infarction (heart attack) and severe aortic stenosis (incomplete opening of the aortic valve).

A sauna is safe, however, for most people with stable coronary heart disease. It is not harmful to the aged or even young infants over three months in moderation and does not affect wound healing.

If a feeling of light-headedness occurs during the use of the steam room carefully step out and into the shower for a refreshing cool down.  After showering sit down and relax, allowing the body to air dry.
